LACK OF SLEEP REDUCES PERFORMANCE AND CREATIVITY
LACK OF SLEEP HAS THE SAME EFFECT AS ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION
Sleeping is healthy. This became obvious once again in the context of an article in the Tagesanzeiger of February 11, 2019. In an interview with the occupational psychologist Theo Wehner, it was stated that regular sleep deprivation as well as a one-time continuous phase without sleep of 24 hours has the same effects on our mental performance as a blood alcohol content of 1.0 per mille. Chronic sleep deficit not only reduces our ability to concentrate, but also increases our willingness to take risks, our error rate and our unethical behaviour.
PRESSURE TO PERFORM PROMOTES SLEEP DEPRIVATION
Due to our performance-oriented society and the fact that we are available and ready to work around the clock with the help of technical progress, the rest breaks for each of us are getting smaller and smaller. Instead, we expect ourselves to achieve maximum performance with as few rest breaks as possible and a lack of sleep is often the result.
In addition to exercise and a healthy diet, sufficient sleep is another elementary part that is important for our health. According to Theo Wehner, too little attention is paid to this factor in working life.
THE RELAX’BOX FROM ERGODATA – AN INNOVATION TO INCREASE THE PERFORMANCE AND CREATIVITY OF THE WORKFORCE
According to the article in Tagesanzeiger, so-called power naps, i.e. the short sleep of about 10-15 minutes during the day, reduce the risk of heart disease by 37%. In addition, people who sleep well can significantly increase their performance and creativity.
Ergodata has recognised this need and commissioned QUO to develop the Relaxbox. This 3.5 m3 large box offers employees the possibility of a short power nap or meditation in their offices. The user can set the desired recovery time at a monitor in the box and after the time has elapsed is brought back into the working day by gentle light effects and, if desired, music. The box can be completely separated by curtains and thus offers the necessary privacy.
From the collection of the requirements to the prototype, the bunk was developed by and in the rooms of QUO. Creative exchange is standard in the QUO team, but in this particular case the team tested the functional pattern throughout the entire process and contributed with many suggestions and experience reports. Within three months, a modern alcove was created that fits seamlessly into Ergodata’s portfolio.
QUO SUPPORTS REST BREAKS AT THE WORKPLACE
Since QUO sees itself as a source of ideas for its customers, we encourage our employees to allow themselves rest periods. A rest box is available for our employees in our offices. In addition, flexible working hours support our employees so that they can work according to their daily rhythm. The joint table football tournament also helps us to refocus our attention. In this way, we ensure that our team supports our customers in their projects with high efficiency and creativity.
