The mid-1990s saw the advent of automated neurological gait training. The first machines to come to the market were highly complex devices at prices that only well-financed clinics could afford. The founders of ABILITY Switzerland realized, however, that there was a major market need for a more affordable gait trainer that would be easy to use and therefore suitable for everyday clinical practice. At the same time, a low-priced device had to meet the same high treatment standards as the more expensive competing products. Start-up ABILITY Switzerland was founded in late 2010 to develop this new gait trainer and distribute it worldwide.
Functional design a key success factor
The leaders of the company were aware from the outset on how important the machine’s design and ergonomics would be for the gait trainer’s success. QUO has been supporting the Switzerland ABILITY team since spring 2011 with the various technical development work and has developed in the early project phase the concept for a functional design that has since been crucial to the rest of the development process.
Ergonomics verified on the model
Besides helping to design the device, QUO developed various technical detail concepts for tasks such as ways to relieve weight and foot plate designs. To do this, ergonomic models on a 1:1 scale were created. Subsequently, QUO designers provided support and advice as serial production started with the goal of manufacturing a marketable product.
