FEM | STORAGE CONVERSION OIL TANK – BKW AEK Contracting AG
[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]BKW AEK Contracting AG (BAC) is a specialist in sustainable heat supply. It is the competence center for contracting solutions within the BKW Group. Its core business is the planning, implementation and long-term operation of energy plants. In the course of realizing a district heating network, old existing oil tanks are to be converted into hot water storage tanks. In the context of this challenge, BAC consulted QUO AG for various simulation calculations.

Since the tanks were previously only filled with oil, a static calculation with the new load case is necessary. In order to make a statement about the suitability of the tanks for the new application, the new load case (hot water at max. 90°C) has to be tested with respect to the maximum stresses in the tank. To enable a comparison with the previous loads of the tanks, the original application with oil is also calculated. In addition to the current geometry, different variants were analyzed to reinforce the tank and thus reduce the stress peaks. In addition to the calculations, research was carried out into tank cleaning. The aim here was to find the most cost-effective and efficient way of separating oil in order to filter the remaining oil from the water circuit. This will prevent contamination of the soil in case of a leakage.
Simulation calculation by QUO
In addition to the data provided by our customers, our experts in FEM simulation use the professional program architecture of ANSYS.
Due to the age of the tank, no more CAD data was available for this task, which is why it had to be simulated using measurements of the tank. Due to the uncertainty here, different scenarios were calculated.
In addition to the hydrostatic pressure and additional overpressure, it was also of interest in this project to include the thermal loads caused by the energy of the water.
Based on the results of the existing tank, different possibilities of tank reinforcement as well as adapted load cases were calculated after consultation with the clients in order to enable a reuse of the existing tank facilities.[/vc_column_text][vc_video link=»https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZqr05P1xlI»][vc_column_text]
